Atlanta 97, Toronto 93
Joe Johnson continues to insist he's no one-man show. For the first time in five games, his supporting cast didn't fold. "We kept our composure," Johnson said. "We're a young team. We learn from our mistakes. Tonight we were in the same position we were the last four games, but we definitely buckled down in the fourth quarter." Johnson scored 27 points and Tyronn Lue hit an 18-foot fadeaway with 30 seconds remaining, helping the Atlanta Hawks snap a four-game losing streak with a 97-93 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. T.J. Ford scored 25 to lead Toronto, but the second-year guard fouled out after missing a layup with 17 seconds remaining. "I felt the team needed something, so I tried to be aggressive and knock down the shots I was taking," Ford said. "I try to get in the lane and put pressure on them, get fouled and make the shot. That is just part of playing basketball. When your team is down, you try to dig deep and try and take your game to the next level." The Raptors lost for the seventh time in eight games, due in part to Atlanta's double-teaming of leading scorer Chris Bosh, who hit just two of...
Atlanta (5-5) at Orlando (9-4)
The Orlando Magic look to win their sixth straight home game and continue their dominance over the Atlanta Hawks at TD Waterhouse Centre as they meet Saturday. The Magic (9-4) closed last season winning 12 of their final 13 games at TD Waterhouse Centre, and have opened this season 6-1 at home. Orlando has benefited from outstanding shooting at home, where it leads the league at 51.5 percent. The Magic won for the sixth time in their last seven games Friday with a 107-104 victory over Miami. Orlando is in first place in the Southeast Division, and leads second-place Atlanta (5-5) by 2 1/2 games. Grant Hill scored 24 points, including a jumper with 28 seconds left, as the Magic improved to 5-1 in games decided by five points or less after going just 10-14 in those games last season. "Last year we couldn't do it," Dwight Howard said. "Games like this, we would have folded." Howard had 23 points and 12 rebounds to record his fourth straight double-double. The 6-11 center is averaging 21.8 points and 16.8 rebounds in that span, but totaled just 11 points and eight rebounds in Orlando's 95-82 loss Nov. 5 to the Hawks. The third-year player wasn't...
Orlando 98, Atlanta 79
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Even with the best record in the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic see plenty of room for improvement. Carlos Arroyo scored 15 points, Dwight Howard added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and the Orlando Magic coasted to a 98-79 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night. "We did a good job tonight, but it was nothing special," said guard Keyon Dooling, who helped the Magic bench outscore Atlanta's reserves 49-32. "I think if you asked any guy on our team, they would all say we're playing OK, but we're not playing near the best ball we can." Orlando, which has won three straight and seven of its last eight, put six players in double figures. Hedo Turkoglu had 14 points, while Keith Bogans also had 13. "We're still searching a little bit," Magic coach Brian Hill said. "I think we're where we hoped we would be record-wise at this point, but we've still got a lot of areas we could clean up." Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 16 points, while Tyronn Lue and Salim Stoudamire each score 14. Atlanta, which has lost five of its last six games, shot only 36 percent and committed 20 turnovers. "I'm going to have to give the Magic credit,...
Atlanta (5-6) at Washington (4-9)
A long losing streak has the Washington Wizards searching for answers. A long winning streak at home against the Atlanta Hawks may offer reason for hope. The Wizards (4-9), in danger of matching their worst skid of last season, look to extend a five-game home winning streak against the Hawks (5-6) when they meet Tuesday night. Washington dropped its fourth straight Saturday night, 115-111 to Detroit. The Wizards lost five in a row from April 7-14 and Nov. 15-23, 2005. "We have to mix some things up, play harder on defense, be smarter -- even switch the starting lineup," Washington guard DeShawn Stevenson said. "Sometimes you have to do stuff like that to get going. "Hopefully we can try different things. We've got to get a win." Only Charlotte and Memphis, both 3-10, have worse records than the Wizards. The Wizards would seem to have a good chance to end their slump in a matchup with the Hawks, losers five of six and five straight at Washington since Dec. 30, 2003. Washington guard Gilbert Arenas bounced back from perhaps his worst game of the season to score 28 points against the Pistons. Arenas also had 10 assists after shooting 1-for-12 and...
Imbalance of power
Player of the Week Dirk Nowitzki – The Mavericks' superstar was spectacular, leading his club to four wins, including one in San Antonio, by averaging 28 points a game. The big week extended Dallas' winning streak to nine after opening with four straight losses. Nowitzki has led the Mavs in scoring in all but one of their games this season. Team of the Week Denver Nuggets – The Nuggets won all four games on the week and averaged 118 points. Carmelo Anthony's terrific play continued, and he currently leads the NBA in scoring at 31.1 points per game. With J.R. Smith giving Denver the three-point shooting it desperately needed, Anthony has spent more time on the block posting up, and opponents haven't been able to slow down the Nuggets' attack. Game of the Week Thursday: Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers – Two division leaders meet in a rematch of last week's thriller in Salt Lake City won by the Jazz. Andrei Kirilenko has returned to the lineup after his ankle injury, giving Utah's frontline more depth and shot blocking. For the Lakers, Kobe Bryant is starting to round into form – he had 40 last week in a win over the Clippers. "Ladies and gentlemen, I give...
Washington 96, Atlanta 95
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Caron Butler bailed out Gilbert Arenas and helped the Washington Wizards snap a four-game losing streak. Butler converted a tiebreaking three-point play with 1:04 remaining and made all 15 free throws to give the Wizards a 96-95 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night. "He saw a matchup where he could use his quickness against Josh Smith," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "Smith can give you nightmares with his ups, blocking shots and catching lobs over you. He liked his matchup and he was quicker. Although he did not shoot a high percentage from the field, he got to the line and made his free throws." Butler scored 21 points on 3-of-10 shooting but extended his streak to 32 straight made free throws, dating to Nov. 17 against the Detroit Pistons. "I am just trying to stay aggressive, trying to stay consistent," Butler said. "My teammates are finding me in the flow, (and I'm) getting hacked and going to the foul line and just making shots." Butler tied the franchise record for made free throws in a game, held by several players. The last player to accomplish the feat, coincidentally, was Arenas, who also had 21 points...
Charlotte (4-10) at Atlanta (5-7)
The Charlotte Bobcats have just four wins this season. Adam Morrison has been their leading scorer in three of them. The rookie forward will try to help the Bobcats win back-to-back games for the first time in 2006-07 when they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. Morrison is Charlotte's second-leading scorer with 16.0 points per game, but has surpassed 20 points in three of his last four contests. His 22 points led the Bobcats (4-10) Tuesday as they beat the New Jersey Nets 96-92 to open a three-game road trip. Morrison is also taking good care of the ball, as he has just one turnover in three of the last four games while dishing out five assists in each of the last two. Second-year reserve forward Sean May scored a career-high 20 points Tuesday to help the Charlotte bench outscore New Jersey's reserves 36-7. "I tried to be more physical," said May, who added seven rebounds and five assists. "The last two games I was out there thinking too much. I wanted to be aggressive and tonight it worked out for us." That performance proved key as Charlotte leading scorer Emeka Okafor struggled with fouls and was held to a season-low six points. Okafor has...
